About us

Lakeland Steel commenced operation in 1976, designing and building original equipment for the logging industry. This was the beginning of the company’s interest and further designing and development in the timber industry. Since this time many projects have been accomplished in different areas of the engineering field. Installation of mechanical equipment into hydro power stations, fabrication and placement of draft tubes for hydro power stations to construction of a 60′ commercial vessel and the Lakeland Queen paddle steaming vessel.

In the mid 1980’s the company began to enter the sawmilling industry becoming established and experienced with installation of “high tech” equipment. Contracts with Fletcher Challenge Rainbow, Kawerau and a similar project for Tachikawa Ltd resulted.

With all this knowledge and experience in all the aspects of engineering and sawmilling, Lakeland Steel built a finger jointing machine that proved efficient and productive. The success of this machine is seen throughout New Zealand and the Pacific region.

More recently Lakeland Steel have been involved in the Red Stag super mill at Waipa, with considerable involvement in the design, fabrication and installation of the new sawmill equipment and design, build and installation of the chip handling from the screens out to the chip pad. We continue to support Red Stag with maintenance and breakdown support as required.

Lakeland Steel offers design, fabrication, installation and maintenance to the sawmilling, scrap metal, fertiliser and materials handling industries.

Lakeland Steel is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for its workers, contractors, customers and visitors. This commitment extends to ensuring that the company’s operations do not place members of the public at risk of injury, illness or property damage.

Lakeland Steel has extensive experience in the heavy equipment, contracting and maintenance industries, we can offer a full end to end solution. We live by the policy that we are partners with our customers, not just suppliers and we work hard to first understand our customer’s objectives and then provide turn-key solutions to achieve these objectives.
